| 要旨本文 | Afforestation and reforestation (AR) are major strategies for large-scale carbon dioxide removal by increasing carbon stored in vegetation and soils. However, expanding AR can threaten native biodiversity, and global priority areas where AR should occur remain limited. This study introduces a multicriteria optimization framework that integrates carbon mitigation and biodiversity conservation to identify priority areas for AR. Species responses to agricultural land use and forests were incorporated. Using a habitat suitability index as a biodiversity proxy, this biome-specific approach improves trade-off management and spatial planning. Compared with conventional carbon-focused approaches, incorporating biodiversity considerations reduces AR priority in temperate zones but increases it in tropical forest biomes. Overall, our approach highlights where AR can be spatially optimized to advance global biodiversity and climate conventions through nature-based solutions. |
