| 要旨本文 | Mast seeding, or masting, refers to synchronous and highly variable seed production across years in perennial plant populations. It plays a critical role in forest regeneration and biodiversity maintenance. Although its ecological importance is well recognized, the physiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Most studies emphasize internal nutrient dynamics, as seed production requires substantial resources and often involves trade-offs with other organs such as leaves and stems. Here, we present 19 years of litter-trap data from a mature Fagus crenata forest, including seven masting events. We report year-to-year variation in seed and leaf production and further analyze nitrogen allocation between leaves and seeds. These findings provide new insights into resource partitioning underlying masting and highlight the importance of long-term monitoring for understanding reproductive strategies in forest ecosystems. |
