要旨本文 Clarifying large intra-tree variations in radial and azimuthal sap flow profiles is vital for accurate stand-level transpiration estimates. Studies suggest old, shaded branches connect to inner xylem, while outer xylem connects to upper branches. Additionally, Fagus species tend to have low resistance to circumferential flow but high resistance to radial transport. To investigate F. crenata hydraulic integration, we defoliated or shaded lower and upper branches on three trees and monitored sap flow using Heat Field Deformation (HFD) sensors. Contrary to hypothesis, treating lower branches caused a larger reduction in outer xylem flow, while upper branch treatment reduced inner flow at several azimuths. Furthermore, reductions extended into xylem layers older than the treated branches, implying lower radial resistance. These findings suggest F. crenata is not simply integrated, emphasizing the importance of considering whole-tree architecture in estimating radial profiles.
