Effects of forest stand structure on throughfall erosivity and model development in Japanese cypress plantations

要旨本文 Forest-floor soil erosion is driven by throughfall kinetic energy (TKE). Although our previous study suggested TKE is governed by lower dead branches in unmanaged plantations, yet direct measurements comparing pruned and unpruned unmanaged Japanese cypress plantations are limited. Also, existing models rarely account for lower canopy structure. This study quantified stand-scale differences in TKE associated with dead branch pruning and developed a predictive model incorporating lower canopy variables. Two 10×10m plots with identical stand density (2,500 stems ha-1) were established in an unmanaged Japanese cypress plantation. Unit TKEstand was higher in the pruned plot (14.4 J m-2mm-1) than in the unpruned plot (11.6 J m-2mm-1), suggesting dead-branch presence potentially mitigating soil erosion. A regression model including lowest branch height and stand density explained 68% of TKE variance (RMSE=2.54) overall.
