| 要旨本文 | Snow stored beneath forest canopies is vital for spring water supply, yet its depth varies widely with forest structure, terrain, and winter conditions. This study examined snow retention on Mt. Dairoku using plot-scale measurements from the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest. We defined a Snow Retention Index (SRI) as the difference between forest and nearby open-site snow depths and modeled it using stand structure, topography, and winter meteorology. Elevation exerted the strongest control on SRI, followed by basal area and aspect―denser stands retained less snow, while higher and east-facing slopes accumulated more. A standardized Meteorological Snow Index from station records effectively captured interannual variation, enabling snow depth predictions for unsurveyed winters. These findings offer a practical framework for forest snow estimation in cold mountain regions. |
