Changes in Soil Nitrogen Dynamics after Clearcutting and Reforestation at the Hitachi Ota Experimental Site

要旨本文 Clear-cutting can strongly influence nitrogen cycling, while atmospheric nitrogen deposition further alters nitrogen dynamics. Several studies in Japan have reported nitrogen saturation in forest ecosystems. However, nitrogen dynamics associated with logging in nitrogen-saturated watersheds remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate changes in soil physical properties and nitrogen-related characteristics in a nitrogen-saturated watershed at the Hitachi-Ota Experimental Forest, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. In February 2024, a mature Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation was clear-cut, and an adjacent uncut plantation served as a control. Soil samples were collected before clear-cutting and during the first year and second years after clear-cutting. Samples were collected separately from upper, middle, and lower slope positions. Soil water content, pH, nitrogen-related properties, and C/N ratio were measured using standard incubation and extraction methods.
