Soil carbon dynamics in two Phyllostachys stands: abandoned bamboo stands still can be carbon sinks?

要旨本文 Asian bamboo forests can have a high potential for carbon (C) sequestrations. Our previous studies showed that Phyllostachys bamboo forests can have high net ecosystem production (NEP), which neared global-scale maximum NEP. On the other hand, still few studies examined if the bamboo forests under the abandoned conditions can have high NEP. We measured monthly soil respiration and its components, i.e., heterotrophic (Rh) and autotrophic respirations in two Phyllostachys stands such as Madake and Moso bamboo forests in Kasuya Research Forest, Kyushu University. In the sites, we have been monitoring above- and below-ground net primary productions (NPP). Our measurements showed negative NEP (=NPP-Rh) in both sites, in particular, the lower NEP was found in the Moso site than the Madake site due to enhanced heterotrophic respiration in the Moso site in summer. Our study suggests un-managements lower bamboo forest C sequestration ability.
