Comparison of hydrological response to commercial thinning and clear-cutting of dense Japanese cedar plantation

要旨本文 This study investigated the hydrological response of Japanese cedar plantation catchments to commercial thinning and clear-cutting through a paired catchment approach. Runoff in three neighboring catchments were monitored since 2017. In 2022, a spur road was constructed within the treatment catchments. A clear-cut was conducted in treatment catchment (M-1) and 50% commercial thinning in terms of tree stand density conducted in treatment catchment (M-2) by forest worker using chainsaw. The logs were collected using swing yarder followed by limb removal using processor and transported out from the catchments with forwarder which caused soil disturbance. The remaining catchment (M-4) acts as control. Annual runoff yield for M-1 has increased up to 220 mm after clear-cutting meanwhile M-2 has decreased 18 mm after commercial thinning.
