Ten-year effects of Sasa removal on root biomass and morphological traits in Japanese cool-temperate forests

要旨本文 Sasa understory is an important component of Japanese cool-temperature forest, but effects of presence of Sasa on forest fine root biomass and morphology traits remains poorly understood. To fill this gap, we evaluated the effects of 10-year Sasa nipponica removal on fine root biomass and morphological traits in Larix kaempferi (LK) and Quercus crispula (QC) stand. Following Sasa removal, fine root biomass of Sasa significantly decreased, especially for those with a diameter of less than 1 mm; total fine root biomass and length reduced by 53.8% and 78.6% in LK but had no significant changes in QC. We also found that Sasa removal significantly reduced tissue density of Sasa root in QC. Our results indicate that effects of Sasa removal on fine root biomass and traits mediated by overstory species.
