Responses of cambium activity and xylem anatomy of Cryptomeria japonica clonal cultivars to experimental warming

要旨本文 We compared responses of four cultivars of Cryptomeria japonica, to experimental stem warming in a 40-year-old plantation forest in Tano, Miyazaki. Four microcores each were sampled from four trees of each cultivar at end of growing season (Dec. 2022). Transverse sections were sliced with a microtome and stained with safranin for anatomical analyses of tracheid cell traits: cell area (A), cell diameter (D), cell wall thickness (T).Cell size (A and D) was smaller for the heated trees of Yabukuguri and Measa (intermediate- and late-growth type cultivars, respectively) compared to control, while heating has no effect on Kumotoshi and Yaichi (early-growth type cultivar). Cell walls were thicker for the heated trees of Yabukuguri, Measa and Kumotoshi, while it was thinner for Yaichi. We also found significant genetic x environmental interaction, suggesting that cultivars may respond differently to increased temperatures predicted by future climate change.
